7 Tips for a Vibrant Yard in the Changing Season
I know, I know, it’s been a REALLLLLY wet Summer, but it’s already time to start thinking about prepping those yards for when the snow flies. So even if we get more rain or maybe even some of that ‘sun’ I’ve heard so much about (but not seen), your yard will be ready for anything!
As the days get shorter and the air turns crisp, it's clear that fall is upon us. This is a fantastic time to take a proactive approach to your landscaping, ensuring that your yard remains vibrant and healthy as we transition into the colder months. At Briar Patch Landscaping, we're here to provide you with some valuable fall landscaping tips to keep your outdoor space looking its best.
1. Raking and Leaf Removal:
The colorful foliage might be picturesque, but fallen leaves can smother your lawn if left unattended. Regularly rake and remove leaves to prevent grass suffocation and the potential for mold growth. This also helps allow the grass to grow in the Spring, making sure those lawns are ready after their long Winter nap is key to a beautiful yard.
2. Pruning and Trimming:
Give your shrubs and trees a little TLC by pruning away dead or overgrown branches. Fall is also an excellent time to trim back perennials that have finished blooming. This not only tidies up your landscape but also promotes healthier growth next season and nobody wants a wimpy shrub.
3. Fertilize and Aerate:
A well-fertilized lawn can withstand winter's chill much better. Consider a slow-release, fall-specific fertilizer to nourish your grass and improve root development. Aerating your lawn at this time can also help nutrients penetrate deeper into the soil.
4. KEEP PLANTING! Install Fall Flowers:
Keep your landscape lively with fall-blooming flowers like mums, asters, and pansies. These additions not only add color but also attract pollinators before winter sets in. Be sure to sign up and follow our blogs for some of Callie’s seasonal recommendations moving forward!
5. Mulch Beds and Protect Perennials:
A layer of mulch around your flower beds helps insulate plant roots and conserve moisture during the colder months. Be sure to protect more delicate perennials with mulch or covers to shield them from frost. With heavy snow expected this Winter, building small support structures to maintain shape and limb health could be a big help. Walk through your property and take inventory of everything that you can do to help your plants thrive during the Winter months.
6. Clean Up Hardscapes:
Don't forget about your hardscapes. Pressure wash your walkways and patios to remove any built-up grime, and consider applying a sealer to protect them from winter weather. Frost heaves can affect even hardscape surfaces, so again, taking an inventory and identifying problems before they happen will lighten the load during the Spring melt.
7. Plan for Spring:
Lastly, use this time to plan your spring landscaping projects. Fall is a great time to consult with a landscaping professional, like us, to discuss design ideas and get a head start on any major projects you're considering.
Remember, a well-maintained yard in the fall sets the stage for a stunning landscape in the spring.
